OP - C01 (2020)

Through a long journey of alterations, I landed on what you see here as my first chair design. As always, my goal is to achieve a balance between comfort and design.

The chair is composed of a solid wooden frame and a hand woven paper cord seat. Employing strong joinery methods hidden inside the legs, the frame was able to be constructed utilizing only glue as its binder. The seat framing is curved to perfectly match the human shape. The paper cord relaxes over time and continues to become more and more comfortable with age. The seat is slightly larger than the average dining chair, that extra bit of room makes for a much more relaxed feel when sitting, and allows for not only dining use, but as an accent or desk chair as well.

The backrest is steam-bent and shaped by hand. Steam-bending is preferred to carving, this technique makes for much more attractive continuous grain as well as using far less material to achieve the same shape, saving on unnecessary waste. The backrest hits at the exact height to keep ones posture correct, yet relaxed enough for longer durations of sitting.
