AL - 03 (2023)
The forms presented in AL-03 were heavily influenced by the glass artworks Larry Bell created in the 60’s, as part of the light and space art movement that emerged from Southern California. I had the pleasure of viewing these works in person at Dia: Beacon and was completely entranced by their translucent illusions.
Maintaining the same geometric focus established in the previous AL designs, AL-03 is composed of two square aluminum planes, forming the letter “L”. A smoked glass top is supported by these “L” shapes, creating a visually cohesive structure. Every component of the table is based on simple geometry: the addition of squares into rectangles. Offsetting the L’s visually aligns the two opposing squares, creating a dialogue of negative/positive space to imply the illusion of a single rectangular base. Following Bell’s works, negative space is an equally important element in this design as the positive is.
